I stood frozen, staring at the TV. Had Charlene really been on screen just a few heartbeats earlier? This had to be a nightmare. That was the only explanation for what I just saw. Somehow, in spite of my powers, I fell asleep and started dreaming. At any moment, I would wake up and realize that none of this had happened. Maybe Abaddon and my doppelgangers would disappear as well. That would be nice. So I stood there and waited.

Anytime now.

Please.

Someone touched my arm and slowly turned me around. Kyn stared up at me with wide eyes.

“Did you see her too?” I whispered.

She nodded. “We’ll get her, F. I promise.”

That quiet declaration snapped me out of my reverie. I turned to the VOC staffers. “What do we have on these Babas’ current locations?”

“Data is coming in from the local police precincts,” she reported. “On the big map now.”

A dozen red blips appeared on the map. I snarled. Abaddon had scattered them throughout the city. Three were close together in the northwestern suburbs, two were near us in the downtown area, one was in New Kidron to the northeast, and the rest were moving through the southern suburbs.

I turned to the others and did a quick headcount. If I included Twitch and the Survivor, there were nine of us. I ground my teeth. Not good. Not good at all!

Etzal’el stepped forward. “I will take the three to the northwest.”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” Veritas said. “With those odds…”

“I did not ask for input.” Etzal’el drew his cloak tightly around him and vanished in a blast of shadows

Gauntlet burst from his seat and headed for the door. “Etz has the right idea. I’ll start with the one furthest to the southeast and then work my way west.”

That made sense. While the robot in the southeast wasn’t in our hometown of East Bend, it was pretty close. Gauntlet would at least be on familiar ground to start with.

“An excellent plan.” Dr. Olympus rose from her chair and seemed to swell and grow larger. A fierce light shone in her eyes. “I have my battle exosuit outside. Once I have donned it, I shall start in the southwest and head east. Gauntlet and I shall meet in the middle.”

I turned to Twitch and the Survivor. “Why don’t the two of you head south and work on the middle?”

They nodded and headed for the door. That left Veritas and Lux. Veritas stared at me with wide eyes. I could easily guess what he was thinking. While Veritas was trained in the martial arts, that didn’t exactly equip him for fighting thirty-foot tall robots.

“Think you two can still work together?” I asked quietly.

Lux nudged Veritas in the shoulder. “We’ll do fine. It’ll be like old times, right?”

Veritas nodded, but the near panic didn’t leave his eyes.

“Where do you want us?” Lux asked.

I looked at the map again. Although I couldn’t say for certain, I had to believe that the robot in New Kidron was the one with Charlene.
